Everyday Alcohol. Asia';s story

In our culture, alcohol is present at almost every turn - it can accompany family gatherings, company outings and evening relaxation after a hard day's work. Often the line between socially acceptable drinking and a drinking problem is thinner than you might think.

Asia and her secret: Alcohol

Asia is someone many of us would describe as; 'always smiling and full of life'. She works for a reputable company, has a wide circle of friends and seems to enjoy every day. However, behind the façade of success and joy lies a secret that few know about - Asia drinks every day, and her life is slowly becoming dominated by alcohol.

Subtle symptoms that are easy to miss

At first glance, it may seem that Asia is not struggling with any problem. However, problems with alcohol are often less obvious than they might seem, especially at first.

Hiding her drinking is one of the first symptoms. Asia drinks alone, often in secret from relatives and friends. Alcohol becomes her way of coping with stress, sadness or fatigue.

Changes in behaviour may be another sign. Although Asia continues to function in her work and social life, she begins to avoid situations where she cannot drink. Her priorities and interests change and alcohol takes up more and more space in her life.

Her tolerance to alcohol is increasing. Asia notices that she needs larger and larger amounts of alcohol to achieve the same effect as before. This leads to more frequent and heavier drinking.

Physical symptoms can appear as the problem progresses. Sleep problems, changes in appetite, shaking hands in the morning or feeling anxious when the alcohol stops are just some of them.

The first step to change

For Asia, as for many others facing an alcohol problem, admitting the problem was the hardest step. It required the courage to face the truth and understand that alcohol is not the solution, but the source of further problems.

Seeking help and support became a turning point for Asia. Talking to a therapist, joining support groups for people struggling with alcohol addiction, and support from family and friends helped her to start the healing process.

A message for you

If there is an 'Asia' in your life, or perhaps you are facing similar challenges yourself, remember that help is closer than it seems.
